Mutant Girls Squad (2010)

Mutant Girls Squad (2010)

I loves me some mad Japanese goodness and Mutant Girls Squad looked right up my alley. In a manner of speaking.

From WikipediaRin (Yumi Sugimoto), a young high school student, is an unassuming and awkward girl who is bullied at school. One day, while being bullied, she feels a sharp pain in her hand. Later, Rin learns that she is a descendant of the ancient Hiruko clan, whose members are mutants gifted with superpowers. No sooner than she learns of this, that her home is raided by anti-Hiruko soldiers. Rin’s parents are killed and Rin barely escapes with her life. After killing an entire shopping district out of misunderstanding and grief-fueled rage, Rin meets Rei (Yuko Takayama), another mutant. Rei introduces Rin to a small rag-tag group of mutant rebels led by a transvestite samurai named Kisaragi (Tak Sakaguchi), who is bent on restoring the Hiruko clan’s place in the world.

Cinema Sewer – Vol. 2

Cinema Sewer - Vol. 2

If you’ve read Cinema Sewer before, or have Volume One (which I reviewed right here) then you’ll know what to expect in Volume Two. As it says on the cover: ‘the adults only guide to history’s sickest and sexist movies‘.

The book begins with an article on Colleen Brennan (porn star) and flows effortlessly to some disturbing info on Leonard Schrader. After a couple of entertaining ‘toons we get an article on ‘bong babes’. Hint: it involves bongs, babes, and asses. An interview with Lee Caroll is followed by a brief article on sick comics. Always a good thing.

Borderland (2007)

I’m not usually a fan of human killers in my movies of choice. Truth be told, they scare me too badly. Even if you’re superstitious like me, you know we have far more to fear from real people. And if you’re not gullible like yours truly, you know that we only have the living to fear. And a lot of them are evil. So having said that, understand that the fact that I loved Borderland is a big deal, meaning it’s a pretty damn good movie to make me overlook my preferences. Set your own psycho-killer-with-a-pulse quotient and adjust accordingly.

Three guys who just graduated from college head down to Mexico and run afoul of a killer cult. That’s basically it. Yet somehow such a simple premise had me physically feeling tense and tingling with fear. We’re hit with a nasty, gnarly prologue killing and then we get a long leash with which to run and eventually hang by while vicariously enjoying fun in the sun con cervezas y senoritas. You know what is coming, but you have to wait for it. Meanwhile the sense of dread builds. Once the caca hits the fan, you can sympathize with these kids who are all alone in a foreign country where even the police are afraid of the killers.

Hobo with a Shotgun (2011) Review

They weren't fucking around with the title.

Rutger Hauer is no stranger to us here at Midnight Showing, and he shouldn’t be a stranger to you either.  Most famous for his role opposite Harrison Ford in the Ridley Scott directed sci-fi/dystopian classic Blade Runner, Hauer has carved out an…interesting resume of films including one where he played a blind swordsman.  Now he can add homeless folk hero to that list.  Jason Eisner, director of the Killer Christmas Tree Rampage short TREEVENGE (which is available to watch for free just about everywhere on the damn internet) has adapted another one of his shorts into a feature length Grindhouse opus which delivers in every way it’s audacious title promises and then some.

I Saw the Devil (aka: Akmareul boatda)

I Saw the Devil (2010)

Going in to this I knew it was a Korean film, but I had no idea what the film was about. I’d heard it recommended by SO many people that I HAD to check it out. And I’m glad I did!

In short the film is your basic revenge story: When his pregnant fiancee becomes the latest victim of a serial killer, a secret agent blurs the line between good and evil in his pursuit of revenge. (IMDB.com)

The movie starts with a woman, in her car, on the phone. She explains to her fiancée that she’s got a flat tyre and waiting on the tow truck to arrive. A car pulls up and a gentleman gets out and offers to help fix her car. She politely declines and the guy walks away. The guy returns with gusto, smasher her windscreen in then smashing her brains in.

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991)

Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (aka: Lik Wong) is a movie adaptation of a Japanese manga (comic book to us westerners), but don’t let that put you off. This isn’t Hollywood going lame on comic book adaptations, oh no, this is full on, in yer face, blood, gore, and action. And on the cheap!

“Lady Terminator” Speaks! Lew Ojeda Interviews Barbara Anne Constable

Pembalasan ratu pantai selatan (1989) aka: Lady Terminator

If you haven’t read my review of Lady Terminator, or seen the movie, then you need to get your finger out and do so. Pronto!

But, as a bonus, if you click HERE you’ll be able to read an interview with Barbara Anne Constable (aka: Lady Terminator) which was done by the uber-lucky Lew Ojeda, and her reply to one question with “I appeared in Australian Penthouse as ‘November Pet of the Month’ when I was 19 – four years before I made Lady Terminator” means I have a new Google mission.

Rubber (2010) – telepathic tyre runs amok!

Rubber (2010)

Yes, it’s true. I just watched a movie about a telepathic tyre called Robert.

From IMDb: When Robert, an inanimate tire, discovers his destructive telepathic powers, he soon sets his sights on a desert town; in particular, a mysterious woman becomes his obsession.

The movie starts with a car driving down the road weaving all over the place to knock down chairs. I’ve no idea why, but out the boot of the car comes a cop who babbles on about ‘no reason’ then gets back in the boot and the car drives off. After a short time we see our ‘hero’ finding his feet (or treads I suppose) and trundling through the desert. When he comes across a plastic bottle he discovers (after several attempts) that he can run over the bottle and crush it. Robert then crushes/smashes several other objects, but along the way he discovers that he can use the power of his mind to detonate things.
