Halloween Celebrations – My Top 5 Movies

To celebrate the month of Saw V Halloween, myself and Alex will be giving our Top 5 movies, posters, music and anything else we can think of to pass time and entertain you with.

So, to start things off, I’ll go first, with my Top 5 Movies

The Thing - directed by John Carpenter

The Thing - directed by John Carpenter

The Thing – Directed by John Carpenter

Why? Because even though this is a remake the story is solid, acting is excellent but all of this is surpassed by the ground breaking effects in the movie.

As one reviewer on IMDb said: I don’t care if this movie is 20 years old by now, the special effects in this movie are gut wrenching, mind blowing, and absolutely awesome. They blow away any CGI pixel based crap out there today. The ‘Thing’ itself is a truly horrifying and disturbing creation…unlike any alien you have ever seen in a movie before. Those who have a low tolerance for gore and blood had best prepare themselves for watching this movie.

And I couldn’t have put it better myself. Anyone who watches The Thing and sees the chest-caving-in-head-sprouting-legs scene never forgets it and will always mention it. Fortunately, YouTube has a clip of just that scene…

So I put The Thing on my list due to it’s amazing non-CGI special effects…

Friday 13th Part VII

Friday 13th Part VII: The New Blood

Why pick a Friday 13th movie? Because I loved the makeup in this Friday. In previous (and future) Fridays they always had Jason too clean looking for someone who’s been buried, drowned and resurrected soooo much.

For Part VII, Director John Carl Buechler (a special effects man himself) had Jason as a more bone-showing zombie which I thought was an excellent touch, even the more recent Fridays – not even the 2009 remake – didn’t have Jason deteriorate which, lets face it, he should have! Oh, and it was the first Friday to have real life crackpot Kane Hodder as Jason.

Enjoy this little Friday 13th Part VII remix:

Friday 13th Part VII earns its place to the Jason makeup.

”][REC][REC] – Directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza

[REC] deserves a place on anyones list due its pant-soiling nature. I reviewed [REC] not long ago on this very site and not only did Alex agree with my review but so did many others.

If you want to know more about the story, or to see screens of the movie, then click the review link above.

I urge you to watch this, the original version, before the American’s release their inevitable dire remake. I’ve read they are remaking it quite literally scene-for-scene but never understimate the powers that be to screw things up…

Saw – Directed by James Wan

OK, I’ll come clean… my name’s Ronnie, and I’m a Saw fanboy.

I love all the Saw films and am, of course, looking forward to Saw V which will be released in approximately twenty days from now.

Although I’m picking Saw here (the first film), I’m actually choosing the entire Saw series as I love them for their complex storyline. I’m not even going to TRY and explain the Saw storyline here as it would take pages to do so, and most of it is so intermingled that it just becomes head-burstingly complicated.

Also the fact that Saw was such an original film when it was released that it blew most people away. It does have its critics but – to be fair – screw them, they’re fools.

Here’s a clip of the now infamous reverse bear-trap on Amanda (the uber-hawt Shawnee Smith) :

I wanna play a game…

Hellraiser - Directed by Clive Barker

Hellraiser - Directed by Clive Barker

Hellraiser – Directed by Clive Barker

Clive Barker has written some of the most warped and depraved things, ie: Books of Blood Vol.I – VI. But that was back when he wrote good stuff. Before he moved off in to fantasty land with Weaveworld and what have you.

But, when he was on his game, he wrote a novella called The Hellbound Heart, which became the movie Hellraiser. Idea-wise, Hellraiser is pretty tame compared to some of the more warped short stories in the Books of Blood, but I’m putting Hellraiser on my Top5 because it was just so original at the time (mid-80’s). The Cenobites, the box, it was all new stuff.

I do want to add that, unlike Saw, I am NOT picking the whole Hellraiser series, as most of them suck donkey balls! Hellraiser went from being a slick, dark, movie, to a Jason Takes Manhattan type thing.

Behold – The Hellraiser trailer. Jesus wept:

About Ronnie

Having survived the UK's 'video nasty' (prohibition) era I'm eager to catch up with all previously unseen sleaze and filth. I revel in mixtape oddness, boobage, gore, and proper latex special effects, don't get me started on CGI... - email Ronnie
